Becoming Trader Joe

Becoming Trader Joe is a memoir by Joe Coulombe, the founder of Trader Joe’s, in which he shares how he created, developed, and grew an astoundingly unique — and incredibly successful — retail food enterprise.

The book offers insights into Coulombe’s entrepreneurial journey, the principles behind the TJs brand, and his business philosophy. He explains how he targeted a niche market (starting in Pasadena, and then other LA-area communities) of well-educated, food-savvy, health-conscious, price-aware consumers. Trader Joe’s founding focus was on quality products, a distinct customer experience, and sustainable practices.

A lively recounting of the life and work of a fearless business leader inspires readers by highlighting the inevitable challenges — often with unforeseen twists and turns, and many times ending in outright (temporary) failure — and also the sweet successes. Coulombe shares stories of independence, courage, imagination, creativity, experimentation, adaptation, resilience, integrity, responsibility, and always — ALWAYS — doing the right thing by people: partners, suppliers, customers, and above all, employees.

I highly recommend this book!

You’ve got to have something to hang your hat on. The one core value that I chose was our high compensation policies, which I had put in place from the very start in 1958.

Always curious about what happens next in these kinds of situations, I was interested to learn Coulombe sold Trader Joe’s in 1979 to German billionaire Theo Albrecht, who was one of the co-owners of Aldi, the German discount supermarket chain. Shortly thereafter, TJ’s began its expansion beyond LA, first in California to the Bay Area and San Diego, and then across the country. To this day, Trader Joe’s remains under the private ownership of the Albrecht family.

As of 2024, there are over 560 Trader Joe’s stores nationally, including one just four blocks south of me in NYC. According to a “crew member” a few years back, our West 72nd Street store is the highest-trafficked in the country.
